wordsout by Godfrey Rust                                         HOME

This alphabetic listing includes all poems and performance pieces on the wordsout site written by Godfrey Rust

Poems written by others, in the collections Cafe Church and Poems I'd like to have written, are not included in this list.

My poems are published in the form I think most appropriate at present. This means errors in the original published versions may be corrected, and references updated so that the poem remains topical for contemporary use (for example, "Patrick Moore" being replaced by "Professor Brian Cox" in "The journey of the magi, cont.").

Typically I may continue to revise a poem for anything up to a year after it is first written. Poems from the printed books before 2000 are generally unchanged from their published form, but poems first published on this website are likely to be changed in their early life, and occasionally I will change an older piece if I have reason, especially if it is being performed regularly and something can be improved.

I don't subscribe to any view that there is a "canonical form" of a poem - writing a poem is a process and it is up to the writer to decide when he/she wants to declare it done. Print publication used to be a good benchmark for that, but as with many things in the digital network it is no longer so clear cut. Where I make changes I don't normally preserve earlier versions, so what is here is always the version I authorise at the moment. Sometimes I have made a note about a change at the foot of a poem. In general, though, I respect my former self and what I wrote at the time, even if it is not exactly what I would write now, and leave it be.

There is only one poem published on the site that I would prefer to remove entirely, but I have left it because some people like it, and I want to preserve the whole of the Welcome to the Real World collection. I'm not going to say which it is :)
