Told you so

Obedient to the latest thinking
of the Sunday Times medical experts
we raise the head of Emma's cot
two inches off the ground
with The Pelican Guide
to English Literature

under one leg
balanced up with
Keats' Collected Works.

Now I sleep doubly secure
knowing my daughter
will safely breathe,
and reassured in my belief
that poetry can make
the difference
between life
and death
after all.

For Emma Rust, 1986.
