The
sailing of the ark < 17

We
must return to sources, to this holy
and wholly extraordinary book into which
we
read back our favourite doctrines, sharing
the comfort of the party line, determined
to
make life what we think it ought to be
until our faith becomes a form of words—this
is
conspiracy, not truth: incarnation
does not come in a risk-free environment—
if
God has delegated his authority
to a team of editors and correspondents
in
different times and languages, is it
surprising that his trust should be repaid
with
anomalies and factual mistakes? Even prophets
must be given freedom to be wrong.
Sonnets 17-22 review the status of the Biblical writings.
